Paint Bubbling
Paint Bubbling (also called blistering) is the formation of raised bubbles or blisters where a paint film has lifted away from the surface beneath it, caused by moisture, heat, or poor surface preparation breaking the bond between coats. Bubbles can appear minutes after application or years later, can be pinhead-sized or several inches across, and left alone they usually progress to Paint Peeling. The good news: a single cut into a blister tells you what caused it, and the fix is usually localized rather than a full repaint.
The Three Root Causes
All paint blisters come down to something trying to push through, or escape from under, the paint film.
Moisture blisters form when water gets behind the paint — from a plumbing or roof leak, high indoor humidity (bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms), painting over a damp surface, or, on exteriors, vapor migrating from inside a poorly ventilated wall. Moisture blisters often go all the way down to bare drywall, plaster, or wood, and they frequently contain visible water. Heat blisters form when the surface gets hot enough that solvents or trapped air expand faster than the drying film can release them. The classic case is painting an exterior wall in direct sun on a 90°F+ day — the surface can hit 120°F+ and the paint skins over while the underlying coat is still wet. Adhesion blisters (poor prep) form when paint never bonded properly in the first place: painting over dirt, chalky old paint, grease, glossy surfaces that were never scuffed by Sanding, new drywall without primer, or applying latex over multiple aged coats of oil-based paint without a bonding primer. These blisters may appear immediately (especially when fresh paint's moisture swells a weak old layer) or slowly over months.
Diagnosis: Cut a Blister Open
The single most useful diagnostic step costs nothing. Slice a blister open with a utility knife and look at what is inside and what is on the back of the paint chip:
- Water or damp substrate inside → moisture blister. Find and fix the water source before repainting.
- Dry, and the blister goes down to bare substrate (you see drywall paper, plaster, or bare wood) → moisture vapor from behind, or paint applied to a damp/unprimed surface.
- Dry, and only the newest coat lifted (you see intact old paint underneath) → heat blister or poor intercoat adhesion — usually painting in hot sun, over a glossy or dirty surface, or recoating before the previous coat dried (see Paint Drying Time).
- Old paint comes off with the blister in brittle layers → the old coating is failing; you are heading toward a Paint Cracking / Paint Peeling problem that needs more aggressive removal.

Note the last row: tiny foam bubbles while rolling are normal, especially with high-sheen paints on porous surfaces, and most pop and level out on their own. Bubbling that persists after the paint dries is the problem worth chasing.
How to Fix Bubbled Paint
- Eliminate the cause first. Repair leaks, run a bath fan (or install one — $120–$400 installed), dehumidify basements, or reschedule exterior work out of direct sun. Skipping this step guarantees the blisters return.
- Scrape. Remove every blister and all loose paint around it with a putty knife or paint scraper. Keep going until you reach paint that will not lift at the edges.
- Sand. Feather the edges of the scraped areas with 120-grit, then smooth with 180–220-grit so the repair does not telegraph through the new coat.
- Patch if needed. If scraping tore the drywall face paper or left divots, skim with joint compound — see Drywall Repair — and sand smooth.
- Prime. Spot-prime bare areas. Use a stain-blocking primer over water-stained spots, and a bonding primer over glossy or chalky old paint.

Budget-wise, a localized blister repair is a $30–$60 DIY job (scraper, sandpaper, quart of primer, quart of paint). Whole-wall failures from chronic moisture typically mean fixing the moisture problem first, which is where the real cost lives.
Prevention
- Never paint a damp surface. Exterior wood should read below 15% on a moisture meter; give power-washed siding 24–48 dry hours minimum.
- Follow the sun around the house on exteriors — paint the shady side, and avoid surfaces above roughly 90°F.
- Do honest Surface Preparation: wash off dirt, chalk, and grease (TSP or degreaser), scuff-sand glossy surfaces, and prime bare or stained areas.
- Respect recoat windows; recoating latex before it has dried (typically 2–4 hours minimum) traps moisture.
- Ventilate high-humidity rooms with a fan vented outdoors, and choose moisture-resistant paint for bathrooms.

- Painting over blisters without cutting one open to diagnose the cause — the bubbles come back within weeks.
- Blaming the paint when the real problem is a bathroom with no exhaust fan or a slow roof leak.
- Repainting a water-damaged wall before it has fully dried; trapped moisture blisters the new coat too.
- Skipping primer on scraped-bare spots, which flash through the topcoat and can re-blister.
