VOCs in Paint (volatile organic compounds) are carbon-based solvents that evaporate into the air as paint dries, producing the familiar "paint fumes" smell and contributing to both indoor air pollution and outdoor smog. VOC content is measured in grams per liter (g/L), and it is the single most important health-and-air-quality number on a paint can: conventional oil-based paints can exceed 350 g/L, standard latex paints run 50–150 g/L, while modern low-VOC and zero-VOC formulas bring that down to 50 g/L or less. Choosing low-VOC paint and ventilating properly lets you repaint occupied homes — including nurseries and bedrooms — with minimal exposure.

What VOCs Are and Why Paint Contains Them

VOCs are organic chemicals with high vapor pressure: they leave the liquid paint film and enter the air at room temperature. In paint they serve real functions — solvents keep resins dissolved, glycols slow drying for better flow and fewer brush marks, and coalescing agents help latex particles fuse into a continuous film. Two important fine-print issues. First, VOC content is measured on the base paint before tinting — deep colors can add 10–20 g/L or more of VOCs through conventional colorants, so a "zero-VOC" paint tinted to a saturated navy may no longer be near zero unless the store uses zero-VOC colorants. Second, low-VOC does not automatically mean low-odor or low-emission of every chemical; some formulas use exempt compounds that still smell.

  • UL GREENGUARD and the stricter GREENGUARD Gold certify emissions rather than content — they measure what actually off-gasses into a test chamber. GREENGUARD Gold uses exposure limits safe for children and the elderly and is the certification to look for in nurseries, bedrooms, schools, and healthcare settings.
  • EPA Safer Choice and Cradle to Cradle appear on some lines and address broader ingredient safety.

Ventilation: The Other Half of the Equation

Even zero-VOC paint benefits from airflow, and ventilation is essential with anything solvent-based:

  • Open windows on two sides of the room for cross-ventilation and set a box fan in one window blowing out, pulling fresh air through.
  • Keep ventilation running while painting and for at least 48–72 hours afterward; most off-gassing happens in this window.
